SiSu: Redefining Simplicity in Street Furniture

A Minimal and Modern Bench Designed by Farshad Bakhshayee

The SiSu bench, designed by Farshad Bakhshayee, is a stunning example of how simplicity can be both beautiful and functional. Inspired by the elegance of a straight line, this bench is a single flowing surface made from concrete, embodying the philosophy of simplicity in form, production process, and structure.

SiSu, an abbreviation for "Single Surface," aims to redefine the concept of simplicity in street furniture. This minimal and modern bench is not only easy to produce and cost-effective, but it also stands out with its eye-catching design. Unlike traditional benches, SiSu contains only one piece, making it a truly unique and innovative addition to any urban environment.

Inside the SiSu bench, there is a steel structure that enhances its strength and stability. This ensures that the bench can withstand the test of time and provide a reliable seating option for both sitting and lying down positions. The combination of durability and functionality makes SiSu a versatile and practical choice for public spaces.

Manufacturing SiSu is a straightforward process that involves metal bending, welding techniques, and concrete molding. This simple production technology not only keeps costs low but also allows for easy scalability and customization.

The SiSu bench measures 1700mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 1050mm in height, with a sitting height of 450mm. These specifications ensure that the bench provides a comfortable and ergonomic seating experience for users.

Farshad Bakhshayee, the designer behind SiSu, aimed to create a product that combines aesthetic beauty with high functionality. The goal was to increase the level of beauty in street furniture and establish an emotional connection between people and the product. SiSu achieves this by redefining the aesthetic of a bench, making it a statement piece that enhances the overall ambiance of its surroundings.

The SiSu project started in September 2017 in Tabriz, Iran, and was completed in February 2018. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted on construction materials, surface design, and refinement methods. Civil engineering calculations were also employed to ensure the bench's strength and durability.

Creating SiSu presented several challenges for the design team. The primary challenge was to create a vandal-resistant, functional, and attractive shape using only a single surface. Additionally, ensuring the bench's stability and reliability to meet engineering standards required careful engineering and design considerations.

Sisu's design philosophy revolves around simplicity. The entire bench is made from a single flowing surface, with a metal structure providing internal support. This minimalistic approach aligns with the modern design ethos of "less is more." The result is a bench that not only serves its purpose but also adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any urban environment.

The SiSu bench, designed by Farshad Bakhshayee, has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that embody resourcefulness, technical excellence, and contribute to improving the quality of life.
